First he was asked to pay N50,000 for mobilization so they could help him arrest the man that defrauded him. Secondly, after recovering N200,000 from the man that defrauded him, they refused to give it to the owner, making N250,000. These are the kind of cases I like the police commissioner to read. The story after the cut.

The police in Lagos State have yet to return a sum of N200,000 recovered from a suspect, who allegedly defrauded a car dealer, Quadri Salaudeen, in the Jibowu, Yaba area of the state.

Punch Metro learnt that Salaudeen had reported to the police at the State Department of Criminal Investigation, Yaba, in March 2015, that he was defrauded of the sum of N400,000 by a car clearing agent, identified only as Folorunso.

It was learnt that Salaudeen had paid Folorunso the money to clear a car at the port. Salaudeen was said to have discovered later that the vehicle had not been cleared, while the money he paid to Folorunso was not refunded.

Punch correspondent gathered that the police had gone to arrest the suspect in the Somolu area on April 22, 2015, and he reportedly confessed to diverting the money.

It was learnt that Folorunso signed an agreement that he would refund the money ─ a copy of which was with the police and Salaudeen respectively.

Folorunso was said to have paid N200,000 to the police for onward transfer to the complainant, but a Punch correspondent learnt that Salaudeen had yet to get anything since June 2015.

Speaking with Punch Metro, Salaudeen said he paid N50,000 to the police to initially mobilise them to arrest Folorunso, adding that he had not got a naira from the recovered money.

The dealer added that all efforts by him to bring the matter to the attention of higher authorities in the police had yet to yield any results.

He said, "My car lot is in the Jibowu area, and a clearing agent defrauded me of N400,000 in March 2015. I reported to the police at the Anti-Fraud Section, D3, SDCI. The case was being handled by a female police officer, who I know only as Folasade.

"After mobilising them to arrest Folorunso with the sum of N50,000, they were able to recover N200,000 from him. But for six months now, the police have not remitted the recovered sum of money to me. The Investigating Police Officer has been giving several excuses.

"She once said the exhibits' keeper was not available and so the money could not be handed over. Later, she said she had been transferred out of the state. I have made a report to the police headquarters on the matter.

"The woman was called on the telephone in my presence, but she has not presented herself either to the authorities.

"I am frustrated. This is like double cheating for me. The suspect is now walking free and saying he had paid back all my money, but I have yet to get anything."

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joe Offor, could not yet be reached on the matter.
