No apology over Shi’ites/soldiers clash – Army

The Nigerian army has said there owe no apology to the Shiites over clash with the military in Zaria .This stance was made known by the General Officer Commanding, (GOC) 1 Mechanized Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Adeniyi Oyebade .

Addressing newsmen at the headquarters of 1 Division in Kaduna on Wednesday, the GOC said that, the Army cannot fold its arms and watch any group or sect threaten the peace and stability of the country.
He also reiterated the Army has no issue with the Shi'ites, saying '


"We make no apologies to any group that threatens the peace and security of the land and will not hesitate to put such group in check.
"Nigeria Army has no issue with the Shi'ite group which is like any other group in the land. But if any group chose not to obey the law of the land or challenge the authority, it means that that group does not value the sanctity of life and integrity of the land."
He added that the clashes between the sect and the army was avoidable.  He ,however, said that,
 "We have issues with those who create state within the state. Our rule of engagement is to address any threat before it becomes a full blown challenge, and any group that chose to be violent in nature must be dealth with squarely."Army has paid heavily with the blood of its officers and men to protect this country, and so we have no apology any group, either Shiites Islamic sect, Christian sect, even pagan sect that is threatening the peace of the country.

"Even in the military, we have Shiites members, but there is no issue with them because they are law abiding citizens.
"We know the business of violence but we apply it professionally if the peace of the land is being threatened, so we are appealing to Nigerians who are bent on causing violence stay off," he said.
 On the whereabouts of the sect leader, the GOC said ,
 "El-Zakzaky is safe, secured and undergoing sound medical care as other detainees have been handed over to the appropriate security agency of government, no detainee is presently with the military"

A teenage girl who allegedly confessed to the murders of her mum and mother's boyfriend faces life in prison if convicted.
The remains of Rosie Sanchez, 38, and Anderson Nunez, 40, were discovered at their Brooklyn apartment around 8pm on Sunday.
Sanchez's 15-year-old daughter Destiny Garcia has now been charged as an adult with two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon.
It is alleged that she confessed to a cousin that she killed them because her mum's boyfriend repeatedly raped her, police said.

She allegedly later said it was her mother who was abusive, and that Nunez would not help her.
The cousin is believed to have called police, who found the decomposing bodies after conducting a welfare check, Pix11 reported.

Sanchez was found dead in a bedroom chair.Court documents show she suffered a gunshot wound to the ear and was stabbed in the chest.
The body of Nunez was discovered on the kitchen floor.He had been shot at least once in the arm and stabbed multiple times to the neck, torso and head, which caused his death, documents show.

According to the Daily News, Garcia allegedly confessed to killing the pair on December 27.
The girl reportedly went to stay with her father for a few days following the incident, before staying with her cousin.
She allegedly confessed after her cousin became concerned that she hadn't heard from Sanchez for several days.
ABC7 reports that police are also searching for a 15-year-old boy, who they believe provided Garcia with a gun.
Garcia will find out if she is to be indicted for murder on Friday

As the ongoing probe of the disbursement of the $2.1 billion arms cash by the Office of the former National Security Adviser, ONSA, Col. Sambo Dasuki (ret'd),continues,investigators from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, have stumbled on an account said to belong to an army officer with N400 million traced to the slush funds.

A top source in the Commission confirmed last night that the top operatives probing the disbursement of the arms cash, which is now the subject of prosecution in a High Court.

The account, domiciled in a third generation commercial bank, had been frozen by the EFCC and efforts made to track the suspect and others yet to be summoned.

Vanguard learned that beyond the army officer, whose name was still being kept secret to avoid raising eyebrows, the EFCC had identified other military personnel, who had at one time or the other drawn money from the ONSA and was keen on getting them to account for it.

A source said that it was as a result of the discovery of the names of the military personnel that the EFCC formally wrote to the Defence Headquarters to release the identified officers and men to the Commission for questioning.

An officer with the rank of a colonel from Delta State, said to have served as a PA to the embattled ex-NSA, had already been arrested and detained by the EFCC for over three weeks over the discovery that he took huge sums meant for arms procurement.

He is said to have been saddled with procurement under the former NSA and had used his position to acquire stupendous wealth, including the acquisition of imposing buildings in choice areas of the FCT.

Yesterday, the Rivers State Commissioner of Information, Austin Tam-George, said the government would begin a probe into an alleged N82m spent on hosting Nobel laureate, Wole Soyinka by the past administration led by Rotimi Amaechi and if investigations showed the professor collected any money in cash, he would be made to return it by using the influences of the Police and EFCC, Mr Tam-George said yesterday.

However, in a statement, later yesterday, Mr. Soyinka said the call for his probe was a form of corruption fighting back.

"This morning, I saw only the headlines in one or two print media regarding the 80th Birthday dinner to which I was hosted by the former governor of Rivers State, the Honorable Rotimi Amaechi, now Minister of Aviation," said Mr. Soyinka.


"I ignored them. It was not, and remains not my business to probe into the catering and logistical implications of the hundreds of institutions and governments all over the world to whom I acknowledge an immense debt of unsolicited recognition over the years.

"Since then however, I have learnt of some unsavory statements by the insecure incumbent of the Rivers State government Lodge. These included a loose invitation to anti-crime agencies to investigate the potential crime of being honoured through any occasion."

Mr. Soyinka said the Rivers government's claims was warning he recounted in his recent publication, The Republic of Liars.

"Those words were: Corruption strikes back. In this ongoing instance, that expression translates most vividly as 'Those who are neck deep in the sewage of corruption ensure that they splatter sewage in all possible and improbable directions.'

"I do however fully support the Wikeleaks call for multi-directional probes. I recommend further that he involve the services of INTERPOL to guarantee its extension to all international organisations and governments to whom I owe uncountable events of recognition – including birthday luncheons, dinners, cultural receptions and events of real, fictitious, or simply opportunistic flavoring – to which I have submitted myself.

"The descent to this present level of abominable distractions makes one truly despair. It is one that even I did not envisage when I warned – corruption strikes back.

"Whether it brings honour or dishonour to the nation is another matter – I am saddened, but indifferent.


"EFCC and company – over to you. You all know where I live."

 Usually it's women that are known for backing their children in public, so Sandani Muremela, 26, from Makhado in Limpopo, South Africa, caused a stir when he did the same thing with his 3-year-old daughter, Funzani, at a shop.

Many laughed at him. Some even said the girl's mum had cast a love spell on him. While speaking with Daily Sun, Sandani said: "To make grocery shopping easier I bought a towel to carry Funzani on my back. Women do it all the time, so why shouldn't I?"

 Sandani, who works as a safety officer at a mine, said he couldn't believe it when other men laughed at him and said the child's mum had given him korobela. He said: "I asked one guy why he was laughing but he looked away and didn't respond.

He probably thought I was a madman." . . Sandani said he takes good care of his daughter because he was raised by a single mum after his father left when he was only a year old. He said: "I don't want my child not to know the love of a father. It's not a good thing at all. I love my daughter and will do everything to protect her."

 Funzani's mum, Lebohang Mashego, 26, said "Sandani is a good father and she knew she could depend on him. I'm proud of him. I'm glad he's not ashamed to carry our daughter like that, and I didn't give him korobela."

Janet Jackson said she doesn't have cancer, but she isn't specifying the illness that interfered with a concert tour that she postponed.
On her Twitter account Wednesday, Jackson posted a two-minute clip from her song "The Great Forever," followed by a personal message in which she said she's recovering but offered no further details. She said her doctors have approved her concerts as scheduled in Europe.
She wrote:
"The rumors are untrue. I do not have cancer. I'm recovering," she posted, an apparent response to online reports that she was suffering from throat cancer.
Her announcement came less than two weeks after Jackson said she was postponing her "Unbreakable" tour to have an unspecified surgical procedure. Jackson had been next scheduled to perform Saturday in Denver. She's scheduled to perform in Europe in March.

A28-year-old man, Okwuchukwu Ibekwe, has been arrested for allegedly selling his five-month-old son to a syndicate in Anambra State for N400,000.
It was learnt that Okwuchukwu, who lives on Shinaba Street, in the Iyana Iba area of Lagos, had some difficulties in his trade and allegedly decided with his wife to raise some money by selling the baby.

According to Punch, the Ibekwes had contacted one Chinelo, who is still on the run, on December 17, 2015, for the transaction.
It was learnt that Chinelo, who stayed in Ihiala, Anambra State, paid the Ibekwes N400,000 ─ N250,000 to the father and N150,000 to the mother of the baby.
It was gathered that the man, however, had a quarrel with his wife after returning from his trip to Anambra. It was gathered that when he refused to give the wife her share, she reported the matter to the police.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the baby's mother fled the house after making the report.
Okwuchukwu was, however, arrested and detained at the Police Gender Unit, Ikeja, while police operatives also arrested Chinelo's husband in Anambra State. The baby and Chinelo had yet to be found.
While being paraded on Wednesday, Okwuchukwu said he collected N400,000 from Chinelo in exchange for his son with the full knowledge of his wife.
He said, "Chinelo was to give me N400,000 for the baby. My wife was the one who suggested that we dispose of the baby to meet our business needs.
"But Chinelo gave me N250,000 for the baby when I went to deliver him to her in Anambra State.
"When I returned, my wife and I quarrelled and she ran away for three days. I did not know that she went to report the matter to the police. She was concerned with her own share of N150,000.
"I sell vehicle spare parts in Ladipo market.
"It was a lawyer who called me that my wife had reported me to the police, and that I should come and see her. When I went there, I was arrested.
"I do not know the whereabouts of my son. I did not know Chinelo would run away with my child."
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, who paraded the suspect, said the case was undergoing "intense investigation."
"The suspect is assisting the police with information to recover the baby," he added.

In an interview with Global Grind, 22 year old Lira Galore who was engaged to rapper, Rick Ross, confirmed that she's no longer with him. She said they decided to go their separate ways.
She said:
According to Lira, Rozay was the first famous person she'd ever been involved with, and it was also the first time she'd been in love.
She said:
"This was my first time in a public relationship, so I was happy about putting it out there," she said while speaking to Global Grind. "But people on social media don't like to see that type of stuff, so they dug up old stuff that didn't matter."
Later in the interview, Lira confirmed she and Ross actually did split a while back but eventually reunited. The reason for the initial break up? It had to do with a photo people kept posting of Galore and Meek Mill.
"I'm not worried about the picture with Meek," stated Lira.
"It was just a picture that I posted on my Instagram. I was at work. I used to dance, and it was just a picture. I think the initial breakup was a combination of everything from people digging up tweets when I was 17 years old tweeting about different people, to the picture of Meek."
"Everybody just kept posting it and I felt like as a man, he just couldn't handle it when it was just nothing. I feel like during that time apart he realized he was tripping, so we got back together," she added.
Galore also mentioned that she still carries deep feelings for the MMG chief. She added:
"We just decided to go our separate ways," explained the popular model. "I'm 22 and this was my first time in love, and I put it out there. I'm still in love with him, but some things don't go as you would like them to go."

Campaign for Democracy, South East Zone, yesterday, called for the immediate release of the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, the Publicity Secretary of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Olisah Metuh and the former National Security Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd).

In a statement in Onitsha, Anambra State, CD expressed concern that Pres. Buhari had formed the habit of cracking down on Igbo leaders at any slight provocation.

In the statement by its chairman, Dede A. Uzor, CD said it wasn't fair that the Pres. refused to release Kanu despite being granted bail, just as he also refused to obey the court order which granted Dasuki bail to travel abroad for his medical check-up.

The statement, gave Buhari a seven-day ultimatum within which to release Kanu, Metuh and Dasuki from detention or else CD would mobilize more than 70 million Ndigbo, both home and in the Diaspora, to carry out a mass protest against their continued detention.

The statement noted that CD was not against arresting any corrupt public officers, but reminded Buhari of the need to obey the sanctity of court orders or rulings, which he swore to uphold.
He said:
"Buhari should tell us how many All Progressives Congress, APC, members he has arrested for corrupt practices or does it mean that APC members are all clean, including the former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, who allegedly spent over $16 billion on power sector reform without anything to show for it?"

After a long drawn media battle,families of Afro hip-hop singer, David Adeleke (aka Davido) and his Baby mama, Sophia Momodu, have fi­nally signed a peace agreement.
The SUN mewspaper reports that they decided to resolve amicably, the child trafficking allegation levelled against the music star. 
 
This came at a meeting held at the instance of the Na­tional Agency For the Prohibition of Trafficking In Per­son (NAPTIP) which was attended by Sophia, the musi­cian's father, Deji Adeleke, Mr. and Mrs. Dele Momodu, Adeleke's lawyer, counsel to Dele Momodu, Gbolaga Ajayi, Mr. Ajayi Famakinwa, and NAPTIP's representa­tives. 

At the meeting, it was decided that the issue be resolved amicably and that both families should stop the ongoing media war.
Consequently, both sides were made to sign an agree­ment to stop the media face-off.

NAPTIP's representatives, who took Sophia and Dele Momodu and his wife's statements, advised the Adelekes to allow the child's mother have access to her child, currently in custody of Davido's half-sister, Ashley Adeleke.

Momodu's lawyer, Gbolaga Ajayi, who con­firmed that the meeting held, told Daily Sun that the issue of blackmail being alleged by Davido does not arise.
"What will Dele Momodu blackmail Davido for; mon­ey, position or what?" he queried.

Bloomberg: China Halts Stock Trading After 7% Rout Triggers Circuit Breaker

Chinese stock exchanges closed early for the second time this week after the CSI 300 Index plunged more than 7 percent.

Trading of shares and index futures was halted by automatic circuit breakers from about 9:59 a.m. local time. Stocks fell after China's central bank weakened the currency's daily reference rate by the most since August.

"The yuan's depreciation has exceeded investors' expectations," said Wang Zheng, Shanghai-based chief investment officer at Jingxi Investment Management Co. "Investors are getting spooked by the declines, which will spur capital outflows."

WNU Editor: China's currency has also taken a hit .... China guides yuan sharply lower, jolts markets, offshore currency plunges (CNBC). If China's stock market collapse starts to impact other exchanges .... including Western Europe and the U.S. .... the implications are going to be profound. Europe's debt problems are already serious .... one can only imagine what a stock market rout would look like. And as for the U.S. .... in a Presidential election year .... any economic crisis would only benefit Trump. In fact .... I am willing to make the prediction that if the U.S. stock markets suffer serious losses this year .... it will all but guarantee a Trump Presidential election in November 2016.

Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore issued an order Wednesday informing the state's probate judges of their "ministerial duty not to issue any marriage license contrary" to Alabama's constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage.

Those who flounder in the sewage of corruption

This morning, I saw only the headlines in one or two print media regarding the 80th Birthday dinner to which I was hosted by the former governor of Rivers State, the Honorable Rotimi Amechi, now Minister of Aviation. I ignored them. It was not, and remains not my business to probe into the catering and logistical implications of the hundreds of institutions and governments all over the world to whom I acknowledge an immense debt of unsolicited recognition over the years.
Since then however, I have learnt of some unsavory statements by the insecure incumbent of the Rivers State government Lodge. These included a loose invitation to anti-crime agencies to investigate the potential crime of being honoured through any occasion. The unprecedented call by this governor is prescient of a warning I recounted in my recent pamphlet publication THE REPUBLIC OF LIARS, and was taken from my address to an anti-corruption global conference that took place in Tunisia two years ago.
Those words were: CORRUPTION STRIKES BACK. In this ongoing instance, that expression translates most vividly as "Those who are neck deep in the sewage of corruption ensure that they splatter sewage in all possible and improbable directions."'
I do however fully support the Wikeleaks call for multi-directional probes. I recommend further that he involve the services of INTERPOL to guarantee its extension to all international organisations and governments to whom I owe uncountable events of recognition – including birthday luncheons, dinners, cultural receptions and events of real, fictitious, or simply opportunistic flavoring – to which I have submitted myself.
The descent to this present level of abominable distractions makes one truly despair. It is one that even I did not envisage when I warned – CORRUPTION STRIKES BACK! Whether it brings honour or dishonour to the nation is another matter – I am saddened, but indifferent.

A 32-year-old man, Musa Ismail, was arrested by the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly raping his neigbour, and robbing her of her property worth N91,500
It was learnt that Ismail lived on Kadiri Street, in the Agege area, while his gang members ─ Saheed Lawal, Wasiu Ajanaku, and Tayo Inawole ─ resided with the victim on Okunola Street.

It was gathered that the robbers gained access to Joy's apartment around 2am on December 26 after breaking a window, and stole three phones valued at N43,500 and a cash sum of N48,000
After the robbery, Ismail reportedly took out a knife and ordered Joy, said to be in her mid 20s, to lie down and then raped her before he fled the building with his gang.
 
Fortunately, Joy was able to identify Ismail during the robbery and reported the incident at the Dopemu Police Division, which lead to the suspects' arrest.
 
Joy was directed to the Mirabel Centre, which attends to rape victims, where a medical test conducted on her confirmed that she was raped.
"The suspects are neighbours of the woman. They had an altercation after she warned them to stop smoking cannabis at the back of her apartment. It was in the night of that day that they burgled her room and one of them raped her," the source added.
Meanwhile, the suspects were arraigned before an Ogba Magistrates' Court on three counts bordering on burglary and stealing. Ismail, in addition to the counts, was charged with rape.
 
The case was adjourned till January 25, 2016.

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Wednesday received a report of the five-man Tribunal of Inquiry which investigated the civil unrest in Ibeju-Lekki area of the State on October 12, 2015 that led to the death of the Managing Director of Lekki Worldwide Investment Limited, Alhaji Tajudeen Disu.
According to the Chief Press Secretary, Habib Aruna, Governor Ambode had on October 22, 2015, inaugurated the Tribunal chaired by a retired Lagos State High Court Judge, Hon. Justice Adesuyi Olateru-Olagbegi, with the mandate to inquire into the origin, factors and circumstances leading to the breach of peace, as well as make recommendations to government based on the findings.
 
While describing the Lekki Free Trade Zone (LFTZ) as an important project to the economy of the State because of its strategic importance to the job creation drive of his administration, Governor Ambode said he was prepared to do everything to ensure its success.

The Governor therefore vowed that any issue concerning the success of the project would be treated with dispatch.

According to him:
"The Report of the Tribunal has been submitted today and the State Government will give serious consideration to the recommendations of the Tribunal and take decisions to ensure that such an incident does not recur.

"Let me assure members of the public and investors alike that this Government will always uphold the Rule of Law and continue to provide a conducive atmosphere for businesses to thrive," he said.

Governor Ambode also thanked members of the Tribunal for diligently carrying out the assignment within the time frame given, and expressed hope that they would be willing and ready to serve the State in future when called upon.

Earlier, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem, said it was noteworthy that the Tribunal had the inaugural sitting on November 16, 2015 and completed the assignment with the forty-five days given to it.

Kazeem said the civil disturbances which led to Disu's killing in the Okunraye Community had slowed down the development of the LFTZ, and that the Tribunal was set up as part of efforts to ensure safety of lives and property, prevent recurrence and enhance the economic wellbeing of the State.

In his remarks, Justice Olateru-Olagbegi said the Tribunal received a total of 22 memoranda and 33 witness statements, including those from eminent Nigerians.

He added that the Tribunal made a total of 24 recommendations which covered many issues including the question of who pulled the trigger that killed Disu, as well as the remote and immediate causes of the civil unrest.

Justice Olateru-Olagbegi also said that the Tribunal recommended the measures to adopt in forestalling a recurrence as well as other miscellaneous matters incidental to the unrest, adding that there was no majority or minority report, but just one team report of the Tribunal.

He said:
"We took time out to visit the Lekki Free Trade Zone. We visited the Dangote Industries, Lekki Worldwide Investment Limited, the villages and communities in the area including Okunraye where the trouble began.

"We saw a lot and we learnt a lot. From what was presented to us, from what we saw with our own eyes, our view is that Lekki Free Trade Zone has vast potential to transform the economic landscape of Lagos State in terms of generating massive employment, creation of wealth, generating revenue and so on.

"Our findings reveal that the transformation would be on a scale that is hitherto unparalleled in Africa," Justice Olateru-Olagbegi said.
