[[DES_1]]The FC Barcelona Under-19 team saw their three-game unbeaten streak snapped on Sunday afternoon, falling 1–0 at CD Ebro in the first game of 2016.

A surprise goal coming directly off a corner kick in minute 16 was all Ebro needed as the Catalans were unable to take advantage of numerous scoring chances throughout the remainder of the game.

Seung Ho Paik, who started, and Alexis Meva, who came on for Paik later in the game, reappeared for FC Barcelona while Rafa Mujica made his blaugrana debut.

The lone goal came as FC Barcelona goalkeeper Andreu Cases was screened on an Ebro corner kick and was unable to react in time.

Ebro then went into defensive mode, giving the visiting Catalans plenty of chances to equalise.

Mujica came close to drawing FCB level in the waning moments but the Ebro keeper saved the day, securing the victory.

The loss for FCB leaves them in fourth place in Group 3 of the U-19 top flight with 30 points, 12 behind leaders RCD Espanyol.

VOA: Four-party Talks on Afghan Peace Process Set for Monday

Pakistan is set to host four-way talks Monday on reviving the Afghan peace process. The talks will include Afghanistan, China and the United States.

Afghan Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmad Shekib Mostaghni said Saturday that the representatives meeting in Islamabad would discuss a "road map for peace talks." The discussions were agreed to during a visit to Kabul by Pakistan's army chief, General Raheel Sharif, in December.

Pakistan is believed to have influence over the Taliban, but relations with Afghanistan have been tense in recent months. The two countries have long accused each other of backing the Taliban and other insurgents operating along their porous border. Taliban leaders are widely believed to be based in Pakistani cities near the Afghan border, including Quetta and Peshawar.

Washington Post: Congressman questions if Army Special Forces denied rescue force, fire support

A Republican congressman who previously served as a Navy SEAL commander said Thursday that bureaucratic red tape might have delayed a rescue force and prevented close air support from adequately helping an Army Special Forces team during a firefight in southern Afghanistan this week in which one American was killed.

Rep. Ryan Zinke (R-Mont.), questioned if the rules of engagement in Afghanistan played a role in limiting the support troops on the ground received. They remain "so restrictive that when a unit is pinned down available assets are not given the latitude to respond in a timely manner and it appears in this case that it cost lives," Zinke said in an interview.

New York Times: Taliban Step Up Urban Assaults, Testing the Mettle of Afghan Forces

KABUL, Afghanistan — The urban attacks are suddenly coming at a dizzying pace — five in the first week of January alone. Three were relatively simple even if massive bombings, but in the others, Taliban gunmen entered important cities, seized buildings and hostages when they could, then set off their explosives vests when capture seemed imminent, sometimes after hours of fighting.

As the insurgents have been grabbing stretches of territory in Afghanistan's border provinces, the quick guerrilla assaults have been nicknamed "complex attacks" here. They have kept residents of Kabul and other major Afghan cities on edge. The Taliban's intended message is clear: We waited out the Americans, and now can strike at will — even through the so-called "ring of steel" cordon of security around Kabul.

But the attacks are not going unanswered. As the Afghan security forces have struggled elsewhere, the troops tasked with preventing such attacks have had a measure of success in minimizing the damage in recent months.

Jim Edwards, Business Insider: How China accumulated $28 trillion in debt in such a short time

Bank of America Merrill Lynch became the most recent financial institution to start sounding scared about China's debt.

While no one is panicking just yet, there sure are an increasing number of people — including analysts at UBS and Macquarie — who are talking about when it might be appropriate to consider panicking.

To recap, China's total debt is about $28 trillion, or roughly half the world's entire debt.

WNU Editor: China's economy has been the engine that has been driving the global economy for the past few years .... now we know how they have been able to do it. With the Chinese economy cooling down the repercussions from all of this debt are going to be severe .... commodity prices, currency stability, interest rates .... they are all going to be impacted. Christopher Preble, War On The Rocks: We Are terrorized: Why U.S. Counterterrorism policy is failing, and why it can't be easily fixed

According to a recent poll, Americans are more pessimistic about terrorism than at any time since 9/11. The CNN/ORC survey (full results in .pdf format) asked, "Who do you think is currently winning the war on terrorism — the U.S. and its allies, neither side, or the terrorists?" Forty percent of respondents said that the terrorists were winning, while a mere 18 percent believed that the United States and its allies were winning. After the killing of Osama Bin Laden in May 2011, just 9 percent believed the terrorists had the upper hand.

This recent poll, conducted in mid-December after the San Bernardino attacks, is hardly a fluke. Others have found U.S. fears of terrorism to be at or near all-time highs. "Although other issues — particularly economic ones — often crowded out terrorism as a topic of daily concern," explain my Cato colleague John Mueller and co-author Mark Stewart, "terrorism has won an apparently permanent space in the American mind."

"An American's chance of being killed by a terrorist," note Mueller and Stewart, "has been, and remains, one in four million per year with 9/11 included in the calculation, or one in 110 million for the period since 2001." More Americans have been killed by weather incidents in the last two weeks than have been killed by attacks by Islamist extremists on U.S. soil in the last 14 years.

Navy Times: Navy: Video shows Iranian rockets launched near Truman, other warships

The U.S. military released a video Saturday showing what it says is an Iranian military vessel firing several unguided rockets near the aircraft carrier Harry S. Truman and other Western warships and commercial craft.

The incident occurred Dec. 26 in the Strait of Hormuz. Navy officials released the video to Military Times in response to a Freedom of Information Act request. The images show what appears to be an Iranian Revolutionary Guard vessel firing rockets from a distance of about 1,370 meters.

Officials with U.S. Central Command first disclosed details about the incident last month. Approximately 20 minutes before the incident occurred, the Iranians had announced over maritime radio that they would be carrying out a live-fire exercise, officials said.

WNU Editor : I am disappointed by the video. I do not see the USS Harry Truman .... all that I see is an oil tanker, what appears to be a US cruiser, and a few little speedboats firing rockets that I can only assume are Iranian.

The Chairman of Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) in Plateau, Mr John Dasar, has cautioned its members to ensure strict bio-security measures to avert another outbreak of bird flu.

Dasar said in an interview in Jos on Saturday that the warning became necessary as investigations showed that the disease had resurfaced in Kano and some states in the South West.

He called on the farmers to adopt stringent bio-security measures to forestall the outbreak of the disease.

"Bird flu is one of the fastest spreading diseases in Nigeria. This is because poultry products are being moved from one point to another and from state to state.

"The last time the disease began in Lagos around Jan. 8, 2015 and by Jan. 18 of that same year, it was already recorded in Plateau, meaning that within the span of just 10 days, it had reached our domain.

"Reports have it that the disease has shown its ugly head in Kano and some states in the South West, so the need for our farmers to be reminded to take their bio-security more seriously," he said.
