Iran Hostage Crisis: Victims ‘To Be Compensated’ 36 Years Later

The US victims of the Iran hostage crisis are to receive compensation 36 years after their horrific ordeals.

According to a US spending bill passed last Friday, each of the 53 hostages or their estates would receive up to $4.4 million.

The victims of other state-sponsored terror attacks such as the US embassy bombings in East Africa in 1998 would also be eligible.

The hostage-taking lasted 444 days and led the US to break off ties with Iran.

The decision to award compensation followed a controversial deal between world powers and Iran over its nuclear programme.

The hostages have long fought for restitution, but the agreement that secured their release, barred them from making such claims and their attempts were repeatedly blocked by the courts, including an appeal denied by the Supreme Court.

The Congress was also unable to pass laws granting them compensation.

The money for compensation is likely to come from a huge $9 billion fine for French bank Paribas for violating sanctions against Iran, Sudan and Cuba, the New York Times reported.

About $1 billion will go into a fund for victims of terrorism and an additional $2.8 billion will be set aside to help the victims of the 9/11 attacks and their families.

Japan Reported To Be Proposing ‘Comfort Women’ Solution

Japan has proposed setting up a government fund to resolve a longstanding disagreement with South Korea about slaves during world war two.

The “comfort women” were forced to work in Japanese military brothels.

The Japanese media reported that Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, had instructed his Foreign Minister, Fumio Kishida, to sort out the issue, which had dogged relations with South Korea for decades, during a visit to Seoul next week.

South Korea has previously maintained that Japanese apologies do not go far enough and has been critical of what it sees as japan’s reluctance to atone for its brutal wartime past.

But relations between the two counties have improved recently after they agreed to accelerate talks.

Mr Kishida was on Friday, reported to have arranged a surprise visit to South Korea in the hope of finding an early resolution.

He was speaking after Japanese media reports said that Mr Abe had instructed him to hold ministerial talks in Seoul as early as Monday to resolve the question.

Any fund will follow a similar one set up 1995 which ended after a decade. At that time, it was made clear that the money was raised from donations, not from the Japanese government.

DW: Ukraine to impose tit-for-tat trade embargo on Russia

Ukraine has responded to Moscow's food embargo with "mirror sanctions" of its own. Effective from January 1, Kyiv will impose restrictions on Russian products entering the country.

Ukraine's parliament voted Thursday to give the government powers to impose a trade embargo against Russia, which would suspend a free trade zone with Ukraine from the beginning of next month.

"The cabinet of ministers will introduce similar restrictive measures against the Russian Federation. We will protect Ukraine's domestic market," Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk announced Thursday.

Kyiv's decision to suspend trade is a counter-move to Moscow's announcement Monday for a food embargo against Ukraine, which is to begin January 1. Moscow says Ukraine's free trade pact with Brussels, which comes into force next month, could lead to a flood of European imports into Russia, making its exports to Ukraine less competitive.

Gas Plant Explosion Kills Eight In Anambra

It was a dark Christmas in Nnewi, Anambra State as eight people were killed and several others wounded following gas explosion at a Gas Plant belonging to the Intercorp Oil Limited, a subsidiary of Chicason Group located along Onitsha-Owerri expressway.

The bodies were burnt beyond recognition and according to eyewitnesses, they say the disaster occurred about midday when a consignment of gas was about being transferred to the company's dump, due to a leakage, there was a massive explosion which quickly spread to nearby houses wreaking havoc.

The Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, alongside the traditional ruler of Ontisha, Igwe Alfred Achebe, have visited the area and expressed their condolences to the families of the victims.

The governor says he is worried why such a tragic incident should happen in a season of celebration but remarked that God knows best.

He assures that his government will do everything within its powers to assist people who sustained various degrees of burns and other injuries from the fire and that they will be given the best medical care available to forestall the possibilities of further loss of life.

Reuters: Exclusive: Islamic State sanctioned organ harvesting in document taken in U.S. raid

Islamic State has sanctioned the harvesting of human organs in a previously undisclosed ruling by the group's Islamic scholars, raising concerns that the violent extremist group may be trafficking in body parts.

The ruling, contained in a January 31, 2015 document reviewed by Reuters, says taking organs from a living captive to save a Muslim's life, even if it is fatal for the captive, is permissible.

Reuters couldn't independently confirm the authenticity of the document. U.S. officials say it was among a trove of data and other information obtained by U.S. special forces in a raid in eastern Syria in May.
